What Is Ferulic Acid Powder?
Ferulic acid is a type of phenolic acid. Ferulic acid powder is soluble in hot water and slightly soluble in cold water. Ferulic acid powder is less stable in aqueous solution. Its chemical name is 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid. It is found in a variety of plant herbs such as Ferula, Angelica, Rhizoma Chuanxiong, Mucuna pruriens, and Asclepias. Very small amounts of ferulic acid exist in free form in plants. A small portion combines with fat-soluble substances (sterols, etc.) to form ghrelin. And most of ferulic acid combines with lignin, polysaccharides and proteins in cells through ester and ether bonds to become the skeleton of cell wall.
Structure and Properties
Ferulic acid powder is widely found in nature among the phytobenthos. The structure is divided into cis and trans. The trans structure is generally present in cosmetics. Ferulic acid is seldom present in the free state in plants. It mainly forms bound state with oligosaccharides, polyamines, lipids and polysaccharides. Ferulic acid is also present in various Chinese medicines such as Angelica, Mucuna pruriens and Asclepias.
Effects:
1, Antioxidant
The unsaturated side chains in the molecular structure of ferulic acid have strong reducing properties. By inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), scavenging excessive free radicals to achieve antioxidant effect.
2、Anti-wrinkle and skin tightening
Ferulic acid powder is called "intercellular adhesive". Intercellular polysaccharides are bonded together to form a three-dimensional skin structure. Ferulic acid can promote the growth of intercellular polysaccharide adhesive. This can enhance the tight cohesion within the skin, relieve and eliminate skin laxity, thereby reducing the generation of wrinkles.
3, sunscreen
UV damage to the skin is mainly skin erythema, sun tanning, skin photoaging. 305~310nm range of ultraviolet light is most likely to induce skin erythema. The ultimate performance for sun tanning. The molecular structure of ferulic acid has a pair of conjugated double bonds, which has a strong absorption effect on ultraviolet rays (UVB) in the range of 290~350nm. Ferulic acid powder acts as an antioxidant natural sunscreen.Ferulic acid powder has safer properties than other sunscreen ingredients such as diphenyl ketone. It is not prone to potential phototoxicity due to high generation of free radicals. Therefore the safety factor is also high.
Ferulic acid is classified as a sunscreen in Japan. Ferulic acid has a protective effect against UV-induced skin cell damage and enhances the cellular UV defence mechanism. Duke University Medical Centre in the USA created the classic "CEF" combination. Inhibitors of VC/VE and ferulic acid were used to inhibit erythema induced by sunlight simulation and to measure the photoprotective effect of several preparations. The results showed that the combination of 15% VC + 1% VE + 0.5% ferulic acid provided 8 times more photoprotection. It can be used not only for the prevention of erythema but also for the prevention of skin photoaging.
4.Whitening
According to a study published in 2018 by a team of researchers from Kyungpook University in South Korea, ferulic acid has an inhibitory effect on the activity of tyrosinase, the enzyme that synthesises melanin. This will reduce the formation of melanin in the body and achieve some whitening effect.
Another postulated that the molecular structure of ferulic acid has some similarity with tetrahydrocurcumin. The combination of two ferulic acid molecules can get tetrahydrocurcumin. And tetrahydrocurcumin is recognised in the industry as having very good whitening effects.
5. Other physiological effects of ferulic acid
Ferulic acid has phenolic hydroxyl groups in its structure and exhibits strong antioxidant properties. This protects cell membranes by resisting lipid oxidation and neutralising oxygen free radicals, while inhibiting cellular damage caused by hydroxyl radicals, nitric oxide and superoxide radicals. It effectively scavenges free radicals and protects cells from oxidative damage. It has an anti-fade effect and reduces inflammatory reactions. Ferulic acid powder is active in nature and easily oxidised. And it is also affected by pH. In order to enhance the activity of the ingredients and the stability of the formulation. Ferulic acid bulk powder is often used in synergistic combination with other ingredients.
When incorporated into formulations containing vitamin C and vitamin E, ferulic acid enhances the transdermal penetration of the vitamins and improves the chemical stability of the formulation. Its photoprotective effect is twice as good as formulations using vitamins C and E alone. Ferulic acid synergises the antioxidant effects of vitamin C and vitamin E, effectively reduces the formation of thymine dimers, and enhances the skin's resistance to oxidative stress, which is very effective in preventing photoaging.
In conclusion, natural ferulic acid powder is a compound with wide application value and important pharmacological effects. With the in-depth study of ferulic acid, derivatives and complexes of ferulic acid will also become promising directions for application.
Safety:
The Announcement on the Catalogue of Names of Used Cosmetic Raw Materials issued by the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) in 2014, CTFA, the European Union (EU) and the 2010 edition of the Chinese Name Catalogue of International Cosmetic Raw Material Standards of the China Fragrance and Chemical Association (CFCA) all include Ferulic Acid as an ingredient in cosmetics. There is no report that ferulic acid powder is unsafe for external use.
Main Applications In The Food Field
Vanillin has the aroma of vanilla bean and rich milky aroma, which plays the role of flavouring and aroma fixing, and is widely used in cosmetic, tobacco, pastry, confectionery and baked food industries. Ferulic acid powder has been proved to be a good substrate for the biological production of vanillin, which is one of the most widely used aromatic molecules in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
Phenolic acids derived from plant cell walls have long been used as food preservatives to inhibit microbial growth. Ferulic acid is a polyphenolic compound that prevents ROS-associated diseases through the formation of resonance-stabilised phenoxy radicals. Ferulic acid's ability to inhibit fatty acid peroxidation has led to its use as a natural food preservative.
