Functions
1.Lowering cholesterol level
Phytosterol powder esters compete with cholesterol in the intestinal tract to reduce the absorption of cholesterol, thus lowering the level of cholesterol in the blood. Long-term intake of phytosterol esters can effectively reduce the level of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, which helps to prevent cardiovascular diseases.
Phytosterol esters lower blood cholesterol levels. It works mainly by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine. This inhibition works through two mechanisms:
- Co-precipitation of cholesterol and phytosterol esters
In the small intestine, cholesterol is found to co-precipitate with other fats in the intestinal fluid. Monoglycerides and fatty acids are absorbed from the small intestine, whereas the concentration of some less absorbed substances. Such as phytosterol powder increases relatively. When their concentrations reach a critical level, similar substances may precipitate out of solution. Since the structures of cholesterol and phytosterols are very similar. The co-precipitation phenomenon described above is possible. Both cholesterol and phytosterols in their free form are extremely difficult to dissolve in fats and micelles. In fact, they limit each other's solubility. Thus, the greater the amount of phytosterol, the lower the amount of cholesterol will be. The greater the amount it precipitates out may also be. Cholesterol in the crystalline form is hardly absorbed.
-Competition for space in mixed micelles
Cholesterol is absorbed mainly by dissolving in mixed micelles transported to the absorption sites of intestinal microcilia. Solubilisation in micelles is the key to cholesterol absorption. Mixed micelles are mainly composed of bile salts, phospholipids and monoglycerides, fatty acids, free cholesterol, and some fat-soluble micronutrients. It is a very effective detergent structure. Since there is a limit to the capacity of cholesterol in micelles. So it is similar to cholesterol structure of some compounds. Such as plant Sterol Powder the amount of increase can lead to less cholesterol dissolved in the micelles. Correspondingly its absorption in the intestines will decrease.
4.Antioxidant effect
Phytosterol esters have certain antioxidant activity, which can help to neutralise free radicals, reduce the damage caused by oxidative stress on the human body and help to maintain cellular health. Some studies have found that rice bran sterol ferulate is used with tocopherol, butylhydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylhydroxytoluene (BHT). It can increase the antioxidant capacity of the latter by 5 to 10 times. When used with glycine, it can prolong the induction period of auto-oxidation of fats and oils. Therefore, the addition of rice bran sterols to fats and oils and then used in the manufacture of biscuits or instant noodles, etc. can improve the antioxidant capacity.
5. Promote digestion and absorption
Plant sterol esters can not only reduce cholesterol absorption, but also help to promote the digestion and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamin A, D, E and K). This is conducive to maintaining the nutritional balance of the human body.
Applications
1. Cosmetic daily application
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review reported that 26 phytosterols and phytosterol esters can be used as skin conditioning agents, hair conditioning agents, viscosity increasing agents, skin protectants, antioxidants, pharmaceutical preservatives and fragrances in cosmetics and daily chemicals. Toxicological data show that phytosterol powder (esters) are safe.
Phytosterol esters have a significant impact on skin health:
Inhibit skin inflammation, repair the skin barrier, slow down the itching of the skin, skin anti-sensitivity repair, anti-aging, anti-photoaging improve skin elasticity, reduce skin roughness. Which repair the skin barrier function of the mechanism is as follows. The cell membrane contains phospholipids, glycolipids, sterols and some proteins. When the sterol content in the cell membrane is greater than 10%, sphingolipids and sterols through the action of proteins and lipids will form lipid rafts (Lipidrafts) structure. Lipid rafts influence functions such as membrane stability, membrane fluidity and membrane protein transport. Phytosterols are able to exchange places with cortisol and replace it. Or it replaces the positions left vacant due to physiological decline. This restores the skin to its proper stable state.
2. Apply to toiletries:
When added to shampoos and conditioners, Plant Sterols Powder can provide soft shine and reduce hair dryness. It even prevents hair loss and nurtures hair. There are many factors that cause hair loss. Such as androgens, transforming growth factor TGF-β2, and prostaglandin D2. Phytosterols have the function of lowering cholesterol level and reducing inflammation, as well as benefiting the proliferation of fibroblasts around hair follicles.
3. Application in colour cosmetics:
Phytosterols powder and their esters can add texture and shine to colour cosmetics. It is commonly used in lipstick, loose powder and mascara.
4.Application in food and health products
-Food industry:
Phytosterol powder has the effect of lowering cholesterol. Such as high sterol content vegetable oil, lipid-lowering health porridge, cheese, milk powder, milk and other dairy products, beverages, baked goods and so on.
-Health care products industry:
It has the function of lowering blood fat, guarding blood vessels, blood vessel clearance. Different forms of health supplements. Such as protein powder, capsules, tablets, etc. have been developed. And if based on the function of improving skin condition, beauty health products can also be developed.
5. Pharmaceutical applications
The development of phytosterols in the field of medicine mainly focuses on the regulation of blood lipids, anti-gastrointestinal tumours, the synthesis of steroid hormones, pharmaceutical liposomes in these four areas. Liposomes with biodegradation, compatibility, targeting, reduce toxicity is widely used in a variety of pharmaceutical carriers. Phytosterols can improve liposome membrane stability and targeting. Therefore, it is often used in the preparation of pharmaceutical liposomes.
6. Agriculture and animal husbandry applications
In pigs, chickens, cattle, sheep, fish, shrimp, crab, silkworms and birds and other livestock and poultry production, phytosterol powder products are widely added to the feed. As a functional feed additives phytosterols can reduce the cholesterol content of livestock and poultry meat, eggs and milk products, promote animal growth, help animal health, and improve yield.
