What is bulk lecithin powder?
Phosphatidylcholine is a phospholipid found in eggs, sunflowers, and other foods. It is the source of choline in the body.
Although the terms lecithin and phosphatidylcholine (PC) are often used interchangeably, PC is actually made up of lecithin, but they are two different things.
Lecithin is isolated from foods such as soya lecithin and is used as an additive because it acts as an emulsifier. Lecithin contains two phospholipids: phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine.
These two components are essential for biological membranes. They work to replace damaged cell membranes and restore their structure and function.
The body uses bulk lecithin powder to make acetylcholine, a brain chemical that plays an important role in the autonomic nervous system, regulating heart rate, vasodilation, and body secretions. Acetylcholine has been used to treat cognitive problems, including Alzheimer's disease, manic depression, and anxiety.
Phosphatidylcholine has also been studied for its ability to break down fats. This explains why it is sometimes injected under the skin to treat non-cancerous fatty tumours and as a cosmetic agent to dissolve fat, although evidence on the latter is limited.
Benefits
The benefits of bulk lecithin powder come from its role as a phospholipid that breaks down fat deposits and a chemical that enhances neurotransmitters associated with memory. Below is a brief description of how PC can benefit body function and overall health:
1. Supports healthy memory
An animal study published in the Journal of Nutrition examined the effects of PC administration on mice with dementia and low acetylcholine concentrations. The researchers found that PC administration improved memory and generally increased brain choline and acetylcholine levels to or above those of control normal mice.
In a study published in Neurobiology of Aging, researchers found significantly lower levels of PC in patients with Alzheimer's disease, further evidence that it plays a role in the pathology of the disease.
2. Supporting metabolic health
Phosphatidylserine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine are essential and abundant phospholipids that play an important role in the regulation of lipids, lipoproteins, and systemic energy metabolism. Low tissue levels of PC affect energy metabolism and are associated with disease progression.
Low levels of PC and PE are associated with metabolic disorders, including atherosclerosis, insulin resistance and obesity.
3. May combat NAFLD
PC is known for its potential ability to reduce fat deposition and has been shown to reduce liver lipid levels in mice fed a high-fat diet. This study supports the idea that dietary PC may help combat NAFLD, but more human studies are needed to confirm this potential bulk lecithin powder benefit.
4. May reduce fat deposition
Preliminary research suggests that PC may help reduce fat deposits on the chin, neck, thighs, and abdomen. Research published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery showed significant improvement in all cases when 50 patients were given phosphatidylcholine injections to reduce surface fat deposits.
PC treatment also marked a reduction in fat deposits with no recurrence and no weight gain during a two-year follow-up period.
5. Against ulcerative colitis
Phosphatidylcholine may help protect the walls of the large intestine and relieve symptoms associated with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. Studies have shown that people with ulcerative colitis have reduced levels of PC, and that adding PC to colonic mucus can help reduce inflammatory activity.
There are several other potential phosphatidylcholine benefits that have not been thoroughly studied in humans. These include PC's ability to dissolve cholesterol gallstones, reduce anxiety, alleviate PMS symptoms, fight acne and relieve eczema.
Risks and Side Effects
Taking bulk lecithin powder supplements may cause stomach upset, diarrhoea or excessive sweating. Injection side effects may include irritation, redness, burning, pain, and itching at the injection site.
PC injections have the potential to make non-cancerous lipomas fibrous, which requires surgery to remove the tumour.
PC supplements should not be taken with AChE inhibitors unless under the care of a doctor. Taking supplements and medicines at the same time may cause muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, slowed heart rate, and seizures.
lecithin bulk powder should not be taken with Alzheimer's disease medications unless advised by your healthcare provider.
